Nutritionist vs Dietitian vs Sports Dietitian – Australia

Outside of people within the profession, it is confusing what the differences are between nutritionists, dietitians, and sports dietitians. I recall that even halfway through my university degree that was focused on providing the qualification of becoming an accredited practising dietitian, we got asked what the difference was from one of our lecturers and nobody in the room had a good answer. And regarding becoming a sports dietitian, I did not know the full requirements until near graduation, or maybe even slightly after. If I did not know these aspects while being immersed in the community to a certain degree, I can imagine that a lot of people are unaware of the specific differences. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I grew up in a small, country town in Queensland with my family. I had a love for sports, food and music. At the end of my high school years, I was working crazy hours (~60+/week) in hospitality), drinking on the weekends and not fuelling my body with the right things (think takeaways and nutrient-poor, energy-dense foods). When I made the link between what I was putting into my body (food) and my mental health (anxiety, moody, irritable) that I began my love for researching how certain foods made me feel. Alex Redman, founder of the well-known blog, The Dietitians Pantry is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian. We are excited to have the opportunity to gain insight into her expert opinion on all things nutrition. Can you please tell us a little bit about your background and about your current role as a dietitian? I’m not one of those people that always knew they wanted to be a dietitian. However, I knew that I wanted to do something in the ‘health’ field so after high school I enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science which allowed me to study a wide range of health subjects. By the end of the second year, I was loving all of the nutrition subjects I was doing and learning about how food can have such a…

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the industry? I got into the nutrition industry triggered by a passion for metabolism and how the human body responds to both exercise and nutrition. Dual qualifications in exercise and nutrition gave me a unique perspective on weight management, and that’s been my passion for the last 25 years. I’ve also been training health professionals in weight management and more recently with my Metabolic Jumpstart program helping over 24,000 regular Australians lose weight, get into shape and manage their diet. Is most of your work focused on regular Australians or is more of your time spent focusing on health professionals? On balance, it’s more health professionals and empowering them with the knowledge and know-how to…
